Can't create a portfolio

I've spent an hour with Portfolio+ free version and have concluded that, even if I could get it to work (which I can't) it's more like a replacement for K2 than a true portfolo product. Is this a fair assumption? My specific issue is that, despite having read the documentation and watched some youtube videos, I cannot display anything related to Portfolio+ under a menu item. There is just is no real explanation of how to create a working portfolio.

I'd really like to get to know this product but at the moment, I feel I am getting knowwhere. Any advice or help as to get past this issue?
